| Hyperlink to DMG file: file is opened as text in browser Hello, I have to maintain several DMG files that contain software installations. I am no Mac OS expert, I mostly use the Mac to produce Director projectors. One DMG file is provided from another programmer. I receive updated versions of it on my windows machine - as an e-mail attachment. I copy it on our webserver (windows server). Downloading this file from the internet to a Mac is no problem. Now I had to produce my own DMG. I did it with disk copy. Afterwards I compressed the file in order to minimize file size. Then I copied the file to my windows computer in order to transfer it to the web server with an FTP application. This web server is not located in our office (like the above), and it is UNIX based. The uploaded DMG seems to have some problems. When I click the link on the website pointing to the DMG, the web browser opens the DMG file as text inside the browser window. I then "right clicked" (ctrl+click on the Mac) the link and forced the download this way. I tried to mount the DMG but it seemed to be broken: The CRC check failed. So I did the FTP transfer directly from the Mac to the web server. I thought that maybe something got corrupted by copying it on the windows computer first. Still the file opens as text inside the browser when I click the link. But at least when I download the file (per "right click"), the downloaded file is not corrupt and disk copy can mount it. But of course I want the file to be downloadable the direct way, by just clicking the hyperlink. What did I do wrong? Regards, Christian Kirchhoff |

| Re: Hyperlink to DMG file: file is opened as text in browser Ok, the problem seems to be the permisssions on the unix server. As I wrote in the former message, if I copy a dmg file (from a third person) to our windows internet server, the download works as expected. The other dmg, made by myself and transferred to a unix server via ftp, is not downloaded, when one clicks on the appropiate hyperlink but is opened as text inside the browser. I am no mac expert and wondered if I did something wrong when creating the dmg. But if I copy the other dmg to the unix server as well, it is opened as text as well. Thus I presume that those files need some special settings on the unix server. Does anyone know more about this? Regards, Christian Kirchhoff |
