slow HD transfer rate in OS X

i recently upgraded my beige 266 with a sonnet tempo ata133 card. the
card itself works fine.
however ive noticed that when i benchmark my hard drive, a seagate
barracuda ata100 80GB. the results are different when done in 9.2.2
and in X. In 9 i get full speed, what i expect around 45-50mb/s.
copying files also results in similar speeds. but when i do the tests
in X the max i get is 16-18mb/s, no more full stop. there are 2 hard
drives on the sonnet card, in master/slave config. i tried removing
one but no improvement. the tests in 9 were done with both drives
connected.
im thinking that OS X has probably disabled a dma mode or something so
i cant get full speed? would this be correct?
is there some way of getting my hard drives to full speed in OS X?
thanks
