iMac 350 and RAM

On one of my older threads, I was describing my mother's iMac 350 and a
pending upgrade to OSX 10.1. I have received several responses warning me
that I need to have enough RAM.

One post in the thread-- I can't remember whose-- said that the iMac 350 can
run using standard PC100 SDRAM DIMMS. If so, this is an exciting prospect
because it means I can use the old pair of 128MB PC100 DIMM chips from my
Dell, because I just upgraded the RAM on my machine to 640MB. The pair of
old DIMMS is just sitting around collecting dust and it would be great if
they could be used to gear up a computer in preparation for an OS upgrade.

Is my assessment correct? Can I use the old Dell DIMMS on the iMac 350?

Thank you

oodler

Go for it... good step by step instructions on upgrading your iMac in
the 2001 MacWorld article:

Re: iMac 350 and RAM

Alan et al:

According to the site you pointed me to, the slot-loading iMac is newer, so
all one has to do to upgrade the ram is take out a panel on the back. I hope
to God this is the case because the firstr set of instructions, on how to
upgrade an older iMac, is nightmarishly complicated for all but the most
hardcore of computer hardware buffs. Keep in mind, I'll be doing this ALONE,
so I want things to stay safe!!

How many slots does the iMac 350 slot loader actually have? From my
unreliable memory of a recent System Profiler assessment, I think there are
two sticks in there now, 96 megs each. Should I expect to have to remove at
least one of them in order to fit the two 128 meg sticks?

Thanks

Piece of cake on these newer machines. One cover on the bottom... two
slots are inside, so yes, you'll need to pull the existing ram out.

Two slots; you'll see. Plus an Airport slot if you want to make it wireless.

I wouldn't even attempt using OS X with less than 256M. 512 is
preferred, but shouldn't be absolutely necessary.

According to MacTracker, there were only two different 350MHz models.
The first slot-loading model and the Summer 2000 edition.

If you care to know which you have, you can probably tell from the
case color. The "slot-loading" edition comes in Blueberry, Grape,
Strawberry, Tangerine, Lime and Graphite. The summer 2000 edition
comes in Indigo, Ruby, Sage, Snow and Graphite.

if you have a Graphite model, then the case color can't distinguish
them, but you can tell from the video card. Use the Apple System
Profiler. The slot-loading edition has an ATI Rage 128 VR (AGP 2x),
while the summer-2000 edition has an ATI Rage 128 Pro (AGP 2x).

Either way, both of these can take up to 1GB of RAM (although Apple
says only 512M on the slot-loading model). Both have two DIMM sockets
that take ordinary PC100 (3.3v, 168-pin, 10ns). Since you want to
install a pair of DIMMs, you'll obviously have to remove the memory
that's in there right now.

Go for it.
