MacOS 9.1 and connecting to a WIndows network?

Hi all,

I have a PM7300 running OS 9.1 that I need to
connect to a Windows
type network. It is physically hooked up through the
Ethernet connector in the back. There are several
Windows machines on a local hub. Now that I have
all the physical hardware working, I have several
questions:

1. How do I "ping" from the mac to a Windows
machine?

2. Is there a "my network" type icon/function in the
Mac OS?

3. Can I see Windows hard drive shares with my Mac?

4. Is it possible to cut/copy and past from the Mac to
a Windows machine on the network?

thanks for all pointers,
charles......

Hi Charles,

You can ping your other machines using MacTCPPing, do a google search...
it's freeware.

To connect to the Windows shares (and vice versa) you need a third party
applicatio such as PCMacLan (Miramar Systems) or Dave (Thursby
Software). Both applications work great... PCMacLan is better suited for
adding a Windows box to a Mac network, whereas Dave is better suited for
adding a Mac box to a Windows network.

Once you add the required software, file sharing and transfers are a
piece of cake.

There is a Network Browser (forget what it's called) in the Apple menu
that will show all available shares.

If you were using a G3 or G4 machine, I would recommend OS-X as it has
built in support for Windows networking... but you won't get OS-X
running on a stock 7300.

Good luck!

The previous poster gave all the basic information... if you're on a
budget, note that Dave (www.thursby.com) and PC Mac Link
(www.miramarsys.com) both have free time-limited trial versions.

If you have longer-time needs, but can't afford either product, check
out PC-Mac-Net FileShare: http://www.lavasoft.com/

It has a non-standard, ugly (in my opinion) interface, but works well
for basic file-sharing. There is a totally free version that is limited
to copying files of 2 MB or smaller, as well as time-limited demo
versions.

Hi Gary,

This is charles and I was using dave's machine to post, hence the
confusion in the who sent it line. Anyway I found the MacTCP Ping
program and downloaded it but it is in "bin" format. How do I get
it to work on the OS9.1 box? I assume I have to use some other
program to do the conversion.

Dave does have an old G3 laying around but alas no copy of Jaguar.

thanks,
charles......

Hi Charles,

You need to decompress the MacTCP Ping binary using Stuffit Expander
(Aladdin Systems). It's the Mac equilivent to WinZip.
You may have Stuffit on the 7300, but if the bin file lost it's resource
bit, it won't open automatically for decompression. Search the hard
drive for Stuffit Expander, and if found, drop the bin file on the
Stuffit icon.
