233Mhz iMac Upgrade woes! Help!!

Here's my woe: I keep getting no video when starting up from the
install disk.

Specs;
233Mhz Rev A iMac
360Mb RAM
OS8.6 on the old 4Gb HDD
All firmware up to date

Installing:
New 80Gb Seagate Drive
OS 10.3 from CD

When I put in the new HDD and start from the OSX CD, I get no video
but a lot of disk activity. After about 15 minutes the video pings
(like it's degaussing) and then nothing. Eventually the computer goes
to sleep.

When I swap out the HDD and put in the old one with the 8.6 on it, the
computer starts up and the video comes on but after a while.

I then put in the new HDD and booted from the OS 8.5 restore disk( by
holding down the "C" key while starting up) that came with the iMac
many moons ago. Again, lots of disk activity, both CD and HDD. Still
no video. It seems to behave like there's something going on, though.
..

I have since tried another HDD to be sure I wasn't using a bad
replacement part (it's getting expensive).

I don't necessarily want to update my old HDD to os 10 in case there's
a problem i can still use the computer under 8.6.

HELP?

Thanks,
Maddog

Re: 233Mhz iMac Upgrade woes! Help!!

First of all, correction:

I wrote:
> 360Mb RAM

Actually it's 160MB of ram. Sorry.

Here's more things that I tried:
Flashed the PRAM
Reset CUDA
Reset logic board
Reseated SDRAM
Reseated VRAM
Tried to startup with no HDD installed(unplugged, both old and new
hdd)
Tried with no RAM in Upper slot
Tried with no RAM in Lower slot
Checked all cables and connections.

The only thing that gets the video to work properly is to put in the
old HDD. It takes a while for the video to come up when I do that. It
seems like the comptuter's drawing the video drivers from the HDD. For
some reason I can't get it to work without the original HDD in it.

I have the service manual in PDF. I'm using that for all my procedures
to ensure I'm doing it right as best I can.

The best I can figure at this point is that the computer wants to get
the drivers for the video from the hdd and it can't when I have a new
HDD in there. I'm going to try to change my startup disk to the CDROM
while I have the osX disk in there and then swap the HDD's and see if
that works.

Wish me luck and, if anyone has any advice or has seen this before,
Please let me know!!

Thanks,
Maddog.

Do you have the most recent firmware?

According to:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117

10.2 and 10.3 can not install on an iMac/233 without first installing
Firmware Update 1.2.

You can download it from here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60384

If you aren't sure, download and install the update anyway. If you
already have version 1.2, the installer will tell you.

Yes, the first thing I did was download and install the 1.2 update and
check that I had the others. I even tried to reinstall it a couple
times to be sure it took.

Now what?

Did you try holding down the c key while booting? This will force a
boot from the cd-rom drive. You need to do this after installing the
new harddrive. It should happen automagically, because the firmware
should not find an OS on the new hardddrive and then find the cd to
boot off of. Did you try booting from your orginal restore cd? You
will get a screen background with lots of round cd images.

Your not getting this for, but you must partition the drive. The
first patition must be less then 8gig. Don't know if 8gig will work,
but multiple reports of less working. You can make the rest of the
drive as your second partition and put you applications and data
there.

We know the firmware only supports an OS partition of less then 8gig.
Perhaps it is getting confused when looking for the OS. Perhaps
holding down the c key will get past this hurdle.

Yep, I did the boot from cd operation and it makes all kinds of noise
like it's running but my power light remains amber and my screen is
black. It's as if the video is not coming up. If I depress the power
key on the keyboard it makes the noise as if it's asking me to shut
down and if I press the "return" key it shuts down.

looks like I just can't use the monitor??

Firmware's up to date before I started any of this.

"SIGH!"

Maybe you just have a bad setting in the parameter RAM. Have you tried
resetting the parameter RAM yet? You hold down command-opt-P and R at
startup.

- Mike

Sent using the Entourage X Test Drive.

Yes, reset the pram by holding in the programmer's button while
starting up. Hodling down the key combination above doesn't work.
