| OS X Panther crashes under stress... RAM problem? Hello, I just installed Mac OS X Panther 10.3.2 on my Power Mac G4 (Sawtooth, AGP graphics, 350 MHz). In a couple hours of use it crashed 2 or 3 times. I found that I could get it to crash fairly reliably under 10 minutes or so of high stress (e.g. opening 30 QuickTime movies, starting some other programs, switching back to the QuickTime movies, etc). The system was previously running Linux with only a handful of crashes per year. I've read that OS X is fairly picky about what type of RAM it uses. I do have some generic RAM in the machine. Anyone have more precise rules on what RAM OS X likes or doesn't like? And has anyone experienced crashes like those described above? Thanks for your time, Brighten Godfrey |

I've not experienced a single system crash since putting Panther on, so yes I'd start with the idea that the RAM may not pass muster. TechTool Pro 4 will test that for you, or Apple Hardware Test if you've got it ... otherwise I'd just remove the suspect RAM and substitute, or try less strenuous tests with the factory RAM alone ... -- Cheers, _Chas_ http://www.apple.com/switch non-spammers can write to chasm at mac (dot com) |

The system How much of that generic RAM do you have? Also free HD space? That kind of torture will crash any machine If you are determined enough - especially if it doesn't have enough memory to work with. j. |
