Changing monitor resolution without AppleGuideGlueLib?

Hello. I recently purchased a PowerTower Pro 225 from a friend who is
upgrading to a G5. I don't have a Mac monitor, so I plugged an old PC
monitor into the VGA port. The computer boots to the Mac OS 9.1 logo
and then the monitor completely goes blank although there's still disk
access. Okay, so the monitor doesn't like the Mac's preset
resolution. So I go into the Mac with extensions off and try to open
up the Monitors control panel in order to rectify this situation. But
when I did this, it pulled up the message "The Monitors control panel
cannot be opened because AppleGuideGlueLib cannot be found." I found
out that this file is a library referenced by the Apple Guide
extension. So how does Apple expect anyone to fix their computer
problems in Extensions Off mode when the control panels they need
require an extension to run? So what can I do? I can't reinstall Mac
OS 9.1 since the only disks I have are to my sister's iMac and
apparently will only install on iMacs. Isn't there a prefs file or
something I can manually edit?

Sincerely yours,

Jack Mileur

I would say that your video card and your monitor may not be compatible, or
you need a driver/software from the monitor manufacturer in order to make
the adjustments you need, and to have your computer and monitor be able to
"talk" to each other.

Kind Regards,

Thank you for your reply. The video card and monitor communicate just
fine. I can see an image up until the message "Mac OS 9.1 Starting
Up" appears and it changes screen resolution. Only then does it turn
black. I think the reason might be that it's trying to change to a 75
Hz resolution which my monitor cannot do, and so it shuts down to
avoid damage to its circuitry. What I want to know is how can I
change the monitor's setting in Extensions Off mode in order to get it
to stay at 60 Hz when it loads the monitor driver. The Monitors
control panel doesn't work because it needs an extension to load. Is
there another way to change the monitor prefs?

Sincerely yours,

Jack Mileur

Jack

As far as I know, you can change the screen size but not the Hz of the
monitor (1440 x 900, etc. screen resolutions are changeable.)

You might look on the web and see if there's a mac driver for the monitor
you currently have. It sounds like the profile may not be available to your
computer so it's defaulting to the other Hz level.

Kind Regards,
Nathaniel
