iMac 350 software update and other problems (long)

Hi there,

I have been having problems galore with my computer and I have asked
some people for help. I have been given tons of suggestions and
walk-throughs, but I'm still having problems. Someone suggested I post
here so here I am.

I recently bought an iMac 600 via eBay. I previously owned an iMac 350,
but it was not firewire capable and therefore I couldn't use my iPod
with it so I decided to upgrade. The new computer was working fine. I
installed 10.2.8 on it with no problems. Then a couple days ago I
finished uploading all my CDs to my computer and tried to upload them to
my iPod. This is when my problems began. When I plugged in the iPod,
iTunes didn't recognize it. I tried to manually update the iPod
software, but it said the iPod was not mounted. I tried reinstalling the
system software but no luck. The "update" button was dimmed. After about
the 10th try, a day later I finally got the iPod working. I assumed I
hadn't pushed the firewire cable in snug enough. So I started uploading
some songs, but it stalled (after about 800k was tranferred). I tried
again and it got further, but stalled about midway (about 2.4 MB
transferred. I took a break from that to clear my head of frustrations
and decided to update my computer to 10.2.8. I used Software Update to
download and install the 10.2.8 combined update. Software Update
downloaded the update with no problems, but when it tried to install I
got an error message telling me the install had failed and to try to
download it to the desktop and install from there. I tried that but got
the same error.

I decided to take a break and download a game from versiontracker.com.
After the game downloaded, I all of a sudden couldn't unstuff it. I got
an error with stuffit saying something to the effect of me needing the
stuffit engine 8 to run. I was running Stuffit Expander 8 already. After
a few failed attempts, I decided to try to redownload Stuffit Expander.
When I tried to open it I got an error message saying DiskCopy had
failed or something like that. I did a search for disk copy and realized
I had 2 copies. I tried manually dragging the stuffit package to disk
copy and it expanded with no problems. I then was able to unstuff the
game I downloaded.

I tried to reinstall 10.2.8 again, but no luck. I then had a friend walk
me through opening or unlocking some priveledges. I'm still not used to
OS X, so I had no idea what I was really doing. She also talked me
through getting rid of my "Previous Systems" folder. Anyway, that didn't
help.

So, to summarize this lengthy problem, I was able to get Stuffit
working, and after many attempts, my iPod will download some stuff
before it stalls (never the same amount) but I cannot get Software
Update to install the 10.2.8 combined update, although Software Update
will download and install all the other software it has listed I am
missing. All my troubles seemed to start after that first attempt to
update the iPod.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? I am grateful for any
help you can possibly give me. Thank you!

Kenzie

Bit difficult to know where to start but have you tested the iPod on
another machine, to eliminate the possibilty that there's a problem
there. Have you a goog friend you will let you crash their machine. I
don't have an iPod but it's basically a hard drive, could there be
coruption there.

Next it's down to a process of elimintion. Have you done a clean
install, if not then try that and immediately after run Disk Utility to
repair the permissions. Then, have you got any other Firewire decices,
are they working okay? Test.

Also have you tried the Apple Support Site?

Any use?!
