DVD-RW ?

I have been getting very screwy, very inconsistent results with
DVD-RW's on 10.3.1 on a 15 PB with a drive the System Profiler lists
as "Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW"

The Finder will sometimes eject them when mounted, sometimes ask which
application to open, and sometimes not acknowledge them at all.

Sometimes when first inserting a blank it gets ejected saying there was
an error burning the disk.

The ones that I was able to burn with the Finder cannot be read by the
Finder.

Disk Utility will sometimes erase them, sometimes not enable the erase
button, and sometimes crash.

I spoke to Apple about all this. At first I was told they were
supported. After a while that changed to "but only by the drive" I
would need non-Apple software (Toast was suggested) to do the burning.

If the Finder is incapable of dealing with DVD-RW, why present it as a
choice when a blank is inserted ?

If anyone can shed light on all this, please do.
