Some questions about DiskWarrior on OS X

I'm hoping that people who know Disk Warrior can answer a couple of
(possibly simple) questions. I bought a box with the Disk Warrior CD; the
box doesn't say which version it is, but it does say © 2003, and "Built for
OS X" on it.

1) is a manual available anywhere? It's not in the box and I didn't see
anywhere on their website to download it. Surely I must have missed the link
to a nice PDF manual...

2) Does it only run off the CD or does it do anything when my main disk is
booted (preventative)? That is, is the CD only for booting off of, or does
it install anything on my internal drive which can be run when needed, or
perhaps watch (in the background) for file-system problems etc.?

3) Will it work with Panther? The main page on the website seems to suggest
that I will need an upgrade to OS X which hasn't been released yet?

6) When it says it creates a brand new and correct copy of my "Directory" -
what does it mean? Which directory is it? My home directory? Some other
specific one? The whole disk? If it is the whole disk, what happens if I
don't have enough room on my internal drive to contain another whole copy of
all the files?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The manual, in PDF form, is on the CD.

It is normally run from the CD or a bootable drive other than the one to
be repaired. It will not repair a volume which cannot be unmounted. It
can install a background application which will test the internal
drive's S.M.A.R.T status, it the drive supports it.

Yes.

DiskWarrior rebuilds the internal disk directory, not one of the ones
you're familiar with. It does not duplicate any files on the volume and
if there in insufficient room for the new directory to be written to the
volume, it will inform you of the fact and leave the volume untouched.

To elaborate: not if booted from disk running Panther, which means that
it's OK if you boot from the CD, even if the volume you're repairing is
running 10.3. From Alsoft:
"DiskWarrior 3.0 will not run while started up under Mac OS X v. 10.3
(Panther). DiskWarrior 3.0 can be used to safely rebuild the directory
of a disk (including a disk with file journaling and/or FileVault
enabled) with Mac OS X v. 10.3 by starting up from your current
DiskWarrior 3.0 CD. A free updater allowing DiskWarrior to run while
started from Mac OS X v. 10.3 is forthcoming."

Also, the current CD won't boot on the newest Macs:
"Please note that the current version of the DiskWarrior CD cannot be
used to start up PowerMac G5 machines, PowerBook and iMac models
released September 2003 or later, eMac models released October 2003, or
the iBook G4."

Re: Some questions about DiskWarrior on OS X

Dang! I bought my computer a month ago (it's a 17" powerbook G4). I wonder
if it was released after September 2003 or not! Will it hurt anything if I
try booting off the CD to find out if it will work?

FWIW: I have tried -- the only problem seemed to be that it "didn't
work" (don't remember the specifics.) But I don't think it broke
anything.

What's your CPU speed? The 1.33GHz model was released in September,
according to Apple's web site. If that's the one you have, you'll have to
wait until they release a new DiskWarrior CD that can boot your PowerBook.

In the meantime, if you can install a bootable system on a second hard
drive or partition, you should be able to install DW on that and boot from
it whenever you want to repair the primary drive/partition.

Re: Some questions about Disk Warrior on OS X

I have the earlier version of Disk Warrior that was meant for OS 9 system.
But I do know that Disk Warrior for OS X should work for you. Look on the cd
when you load it into your computer.

If it has any installation software, that would be the "protection" you
refer to. It basically watches for problems before they happen, but I am not
sure if this feature is necessary anymore with OS X. OS X seems to take care
of itself these days!

Don't know about a manual. You might check eBay.

Normally you should just boot up with the cd as the scratch disk and let it
do it's thing. It's basically a really good "rebuild desktop" utility that
is the trusted name in this type of thing. It reads and copies a new
directory before it replaces your old one, just to be on the safe side.

It isn't copying any files except for your "desktop" file which holds your
directories and master blocks for your files. These records tell your
computer where all your files should be. Errors occur when your computer
loses track of these locations and the "desktop" file doesn't match the hard
drive's contents.

Hope this helps!

Kind Regards,
Nathaniel
