| Possible to add partition to (or use Carbon Copy Cloner to makebootable disk on) an existing drive? I have an external firewire disk with a bunch of files on it (put there by an OS 9 Mac); it has only one partition. I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner from my laptop with OS X Panther to make the disk bootable as a copy of my Panther system, but without losing the files which are already on there (I don't want to re-format the whole thing). Can I add a new partition to an existing disk without trashing the contents in any way? If so, I'll do that and use Carbon Copy Cloner to put a clone of my Panther disk on there. If not, can CCC do anything with an existing file system to make it bootable into OSX (do I need a whole new clean partition for it) or can I simply ask it to clone to an existing partition and leave the existing files alone? If anyone has any wisdom on this score, please cc: replies to mlevin77@comcast.net. Thanks!! -- Mike Levin mlevin77@comcast.net |

| Re: Possible to add partition to (or use Carbon Copy Cloner tomake bootable disk on) an existing drive? You cannot repartition a drive without wiping its contents. You can, however, load an operating system to it without erasing its contents. in article BBFFD6DE.4DD6%mlevin77@comcast.net, Michael Levin at mlevin77@comcast.net wrote on 12/12/03 5:34 PM: > I have an external firewire disk with a bunch of files on it (put there by > an OS 9 Mac); it has only one partition. | Re: Possible to add partition to (or use Carbon Copy Cloner tomake bootable disk on) an existing drive? Interesting. So if I use CCC to add stuff from a working OS X volume to a drive with a bunch of other stuff on it, can I then boot off it in OS X? Do I need to erase the OS 9 system off it first, or do they not interfere with each other? | Re: Possible to add partition to (or use Carbon Copy Cloner tomake bootable disk on) an existing drive? As long as you are running OS X 1.0 or greater and OS 9.2 (not anything less than that) you can then run the OS 9.2 as "Classic" in OS X. No problem. I am doing that right now. You might check your documentation to verify, but when you load the Mac OS X operating system by itself from the cd, you can choose to either wipe the drive and install or to just install. The two systems do not interfere with each other. That's the very purpose for CCC's existence. > Do I need to erase the OS 9 system off it first, or do they not interfere > with each other? No, they don't interfere. In fact, Apple ships Macs with a single partition containing both OS X and OS 9. -- Mike Rosenberg <http://www.macconsult.com> Macintosh consulting services for NE Florida <http://bogart-tribute.net> Tribute to Humphrey Bogart |
