will be deleted immediately

iMac
OS 10.3.1

All of a sudden when I drag something to the Trash I get the message that
the item will be deleted immediately, and my only choices are OK or Cancel.
I don't know if I have inadvertently changed a preference, but I can not now
put something into the trash and have it left there until I later choose to
empty.

Just before this began I used BatChmod to empty the trash of an application
that I wanted to get rid of, but that insisted it was still running when it
was not. Have I altered my Trash function forever by using BatChmod? Can I
return to trash default?

I am sorry to have bothered you with this; I just restarted my Mac, as I
should have done before posting, and all is normal. I wonder what happened.

Re: will be deleted immediately

Normally you see this in a Mac OS X network environment. When you delete
(move to Trash) anything from the OS X File Server, you get that.

Did you get warned about low disk space about the time this happened ?
This sometimes happens when you get a couple of swap files (/var/vm)
which can get pretty big and eat up part of the disk. They are
removed when you boot and now you have room to save stuff in the
trash.
