Better group is probably comp.sys.mac, and to prevent the app from
trying to access the network, set a couple of items in the preferences:

1) set your homepage to a local page or blank
2) turn off the "Netcenter" display in the Mail pane
3) turn off the auto check for new mail
4) set the default startup to be "Work Offline" - to do this
effectively, you may need to set up an additional User Profile
