Disk and Shutdown Problems

Latley my G4 OS X Server has been giving me problems. Every once in a
while, it refuses to shut down. We have to physically pull the plug to
shut it off at night. I think ive narrowed it down to being a problem
with the disk. Every night after it doesnt shut down(about twice a
week), I boot from the Nortonds CD and run Disk Doctor. Every time
there are 4+ Major errors with the disk, which I think is causing my
problem. The machine is still under warranty(only 3 months old).
Should I use that warranty to get my problem fixed, or is it something I
should not worry about, and the disk is not the culprit?

Thanks

Re: Disk and Shutdown Problems

In short, don't run Norton Disk Doctor, or any Norton Utilities for that
matter, on an OS X machine. Use its own Disk Utilities. I hear Norton
(unless you have its version made especially for X) really screws up your
hard drive's directories because they work differently in X.

Why are you shutting off your server computers anyway? They are meant to
stay on.

Cheers!
Kind Regards,
Nathaniel

I am using the Norton Utilities 8.0, for OS X. I am shutting down the
server every day, because it just serves as a small file server for the
yearbook class in the school where I work. The school has a well known
problem of power surges, and we cant take any risk of losing data(Yes, I
back up on a regular basis, but its easier to take precautions than to
restore a backup, or replace the server due to a surge. And Yes, I do
have a surge protector =P ).

Thanks

Re: Disk and Shutdown Problems

Why not just get an APS power supply back up instead of just a surge
protector? Then you can leave that server on and run Retrospect to back up
your files automatically, any time you want.
