| HP scanner and Panther -- Help Just installed Panther and, for the most part, it works well and is faster than the spotted cat. However, all is not well in pardise. I have an HP scanner 3670 and Panther doesn't even see it, let alone run it. I installed the software for it, but when I run it,Panther reports that it can't see the scanner, which is hooked up via USB. The same thing happens with my digital camera, a Samsung Digimax 130, which used to work quite well with Jaguar. Is there a problem with USB in Panther? How do I get these things to work? I have a slot-loading iMac (DV I think) with a 400 MHz G3, 640 MB RAM and a 20 GB HD. -- GR Gaudreau http://grgaud.exchristian.info/ <grgaud at sympatico dot ca> "If you can't immitate him, don't copy him." ~~ Yogi Berra |

VueScan seems to be pretty good for handling all sorts of scanners under OSX and they are very receptive to any problems. -- Larry Stoter |

Does HP say the current driver is compatible with Panther? > The same thing happens with my digital camera, a Samsung Digimax 130, > which used to work quite well with Jaguar. I don't see this, or any Samsung, camera listed in Apple's iPhoto compatibility listing. Were you using it with iPhoto in Jaguar or with software provided by Samsung? If the latter, does Samsung say the latest version is compatible with Panther? > Is there a problem with USB in Panther? Just got a letter back from support this aft and they said they were working on new softwae for Panther, therefore the scanner is not compat with Panther yet. > > The same thing happens with my digital camera, a Samsung Digimax 130, > > which used to work quite well with Jaguar. > I don't see this, or any Samsung, camera listed in Apple's iPhoto > compatibility listing. With jaguar, all I did was plug in the camera and iPhoto would start automatically. There must be something about Panther that plugging in the camera doesn't make anything happen, not even an icon on the desktop I can open to view the photos. I'll vcheck their web site. You don't need a single update from Apple to use your hardware, you need updated drivers from the manufacturers. In this case, he's waiting for HP to get its act together. -- Mike Rosenberg <http://www.macconsult.com> Macintosh consulting services for NE Florida <http://bogart-tribute.net> Tribute to Humphrey Bogart |

[GR] Panther is considered a majour upgarde, and some things just won't work until either updated drivers are supplied, or the various programs that don't work in Panther are updated. So far, I've got about four of my favourite programs that don't run and two pieces of hardware that aren't even seen by Panther. It's a good thing I like OS 9 or I'd be pretty frustrated; but as it is, I'm having fun using the old Mac OS. -- GR Gaudreau <grgaud at sympatico dot ca> |

And for some reason HP software breaks more readily than others when each new OS update comes along. I've had trouble with my HP ScanJet 5370 software off and on since the day I bought the scanner several years ago. Panther killed "HP Precision Scan Pro" (which never worked all that reliably in the first place, often failing to recognize the scanner upon launch). I have now switched to VueScan, and everything is working fine, now. Hamrick posts a new version of VueScan about once every 36 hours, so you know he's staying on top of changes. |

[GR] So much for modern technology, eh? :o) Thanks for the tip, I'll see about getting VueScan. Now I'll have to find put why Panther doesn't see my digicam. With OS 9 it's all so simple: the scanjet works and when I plug in my camera, OS 9 creates an icon on the desktop and I'm off the the races. Oh well, enough bitching for now. <LOL> -- GR Gaudreau <grgaud at sympatico dot ca> |

In fact, when I was running Jaguar, I often went back to OS 9 for days at a time, but I like gadgets and novelties, so I'd eventually go back to the spotted cat. Maybe I should stay with OS 9; this way it would give me HD space to install Linux. I was a Linux user when I ran a PC, I've never much liked Windows. In any event, have a good one. :o) -- GR Gaudreau <grgaud at sympatico dot ca> |
