| Connecting OS X to Windows XP Mac OS X (Panther) says you can connect to a Window box on the same network as long as it has networking turned on a folder set to Shared. But I am not seeing my Windows machine in the Finder under Network. Both my Windows and Mac are plugged into an ethernet router which is connected to a cable modem. On the PC I can ping both itself and the Mac. On the Mac I can ping itself but the PC does not respond. Any ideas. I would really like to get these two talking to each other and I bet a lot of others would too. -- Bill |

You can check the built-in Windows Firewall by (on the XP system) right-clicking My Network Places, and choosing Properties from the popup menu. Right-click Local Area Connection (in the Network Connections window) and again chose Properties from the popup window. Click on the Advanced tab, and see if there is a check on the Internet Connection Firewall option. Or are you using a 3rd-party firewall such as Zone Alarm? Again, if improperly set, it will block attempts to access your system across a local area network, and give the Ping symptoms you are describing. |

Sorry I did not clarify that. The Mac pings it beautifully. I just can't enter a server path in the "Connect to Server" dialog that succeeds. I have tried a lot of combinations like. <my ip address> smb\\<my ip address> etc. News Flash ... I just added a colon after smb (some documents have it some don't) and it worked! smb:\\<my ip address> I can now see my WIndows shares on a Mac Finder window and my Mac shares in XP Explorer. Progress. -- Bill |

Progress. Yeah, but Steve promised us you could *browse* the network. You could indeed under 10.2.x, but not under Panther? Do you need to install Rendezvous for that? -- Ir.
