Windows defector

Posted to the wrong group earlier. Hope to find some answers from an
advanced Window user. Notebook is for personal use, no games, wp, bit
of spreadsheet and you gather the rest from the list of apps below. :)
MS Office for compatibility with MS users.
------------

Hi all. being a long time Windows user, I'm considering defecting to
the bright side (or dark side) in buying a personal notebook.
Shortlisted the G4 iBook 12.1". Just a few questions I hope to have
answered:

I use the following apps daily, any freeware Apple equivalents?

WinRAR
WinZip
Kazaalite++
FlashGet (download manager) must have!!
IE
Ephpod (Not in US, iTunes does not welcome me)

Those I know of, and will have to purchase again
MS Office
Macromedia DreamWeaver/Fireworks

Thanks in advance. Be connecting to a Cable WiFi router (Linksys
BEFW11S4), hope no known problems with the AirPort. Reading up on file
sharing with the Windows network, any pointers?

Both Safari and IE have Download Managers; what does this do that's so
great?

IE is going away for Mac; the current version and Apple's Safari come with.

That router works fine with Airport 802.11b; your new PowerBook will have
802.11g, though (it will still work; just not at "g" speeds).

No idea, as am not a P2P user. Check out versiontracker.com/osx and you
should find a kazaa client

Safari has a download manager built in

Mac IE is no more, although its still included with OSX. Safari is far
far far better and comes with OSX as the default browser

Whats the issue with iTunes and your iPod?
Again check out versiontracker.com/osx for iPod apps

With the Macromedia stuff, you may be able to get a cross grade from the
windoze versions

I use a Linksys WAP11 Wireless AP with my powerbook with no problems
what so ever, so your BEFW11S4 should be ok

OSX 10.3 (Panther) talks to windoze without any issues, just a point and
click thing, supports both file and printer sharing.

for all sorts of other apps, check out my killer apps pages at:

www.ozetechnology.com/osx-apps1.shtml

You will like the Mac world, and will soon forget about the dreaded BSOD :-)

StuffitExpander (free) for uncompressing Mac and Win (Zip etc-- but not,

you need to make archives... including Zip.

If you are transferring licenses rather than purchasing an additional
license, it may be worth contacting MS and Macromedia to see if there
are any price breaks.

I connect both my iBook and Win systems to a Linksys wireless router,
without problems EXCEPT that there is a trick if you are using WEP
encryption... on the Mac you need to enter the long HEX passphrase-- not
the shorter, readable text phrase you entered to generate the key, AND
you need to start the HEX phrase with a '$' character.

I've done a lot with Win/Mac home network interconnecting... feel free
to email me when you get started.

Unpacks RAR archives, kinda like Winzip for RAR files.

Best feature is to extract all the links in a page and filter them by
extension in batch. For example, a page full of mp3s (I'm being
totally honest here). Also breaks a single download into multiple
'streams', much faster downloads.

Would also like to know specifically what kind of SO-DIMM modules the
G4 ibook takes. PC-2100, PC-2700, PC-133, PC-100? Apple wants a ransom
before they up the memory from 256MB to 640MB. Thanks!

www.crucial.com is big US-based RAM vendor, connected to Micron, the
last US-based RAM manufacturer... they have a good site for learning
what sorts of RAM various computer models require.

Their prices are OK, given that they sell high-quality memory; you can
get RAM cheaper, but you probably can't get RAM better.

Whether you buy from them or not, use their site to learn what sort of
RAM is required before shopping elsewhere.

I think you'll like it.

Let me first say that if you're all about *free,* the Apple may not be
the right platform for you. There's a lot of free stuff (see below), but
Mac people like to PAY the authors of the stuff we really like. We are
not, by and large, freeloaders. Our community is just too small to
support much of that -- we have a hard enough time attracting developers
as it is!

> WinRAR

MacRAR among many others, free.

> WinZip

Built into the OS as of 10.3. Free.

> Kazaalite++

There's a few clients, but as we don't generally steal as much, we don't
use them as much.

> FlashGet (download manager) must have!!

Not needed really. There are some dl managers for Mac.

> IE

Yes, but surpassed by nearly every other browser, from Apple's Safari to
Mozilla/Firebird.

> Ephpod (Not in US, iTunes does not welcome me)

iTunes works fine outside the US. It's just the iTunes Music Store that
requires a US-based credit card -- soon to change --

Actually, no. Microsoft will "cross-grade" you to the Mac version for
just the cost of upgrade (about $130 or so).

> Macromedia DreamWeaver/Fireworks

See above. Cross-grade for less.

Nope. It Just Works.

You can only upgrade to Office X for Mac from a prior ~Mac~ version of
Office (or one of its applications). To switch from Windows to Mac, the
only special upgrade price is for Office 2001. See Microsoft's upgrade
grid: <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/howtobuy.aspx?pid=upgrade>.

go to www.memorytogo.com

usually the best (or at least nearly so) pricing -
life time warrentee
no hassles on a return (incorrect order or bad RAM)

Re: Windows defector

Found a 2 month old(10 month warranty left) with the following spec

800 MHz G3, 12.1" screen, CD ROM, 128MB SDRAM
Office X and Photoshop pre-loaded (Hmm, pre-loaded is bad news with no
mention of media, licence,etc)

Gotta up the RAM and no bluetooth. Can I retrofit the airport?

Current asking price is approximately US$725. Good deal?

Which model Mac? The only G3 Mac that could be 2 months old would be an
iBook... personally, I'd rate it as an OK but not great deal... check US
prices on the new G4 iBooks... 800 MHz G4 iBook is US$1099... with more
RAM (256 MB is as far as I'm concerned the minimum for running OS X), a
combo drive (i.e. CD burning, DVD reading), and Panther pre-installed.

Yours has Office and Photoshop-- possibly (probably!) illegally. You
need to up the RAM and will really want to upgrade to Panther. Paying
for those would narrow the gap between the used price and a new system.

Airport and Bluetooth are added cost extras for the new iBook as well as
for yours-- but with a new one, you would get faster 802.11g rather than
802.11b, and internal Bluetooth rather than an external USB adapter.

Personally, I think the new G4 iBooks are a price-performance sweet spot
in the Apple product line.

I recommend Acquisition, an awesome, very affordable ($15 US) PnP app. You

No, not particularly.

1. CD-ROM, not CD-RW.
2. 128MB RAM -- not enough.
3. Illegal software.

Brand new G4 iBook is about $250 more if you look around.
