| Is Norton Utilities useful on Mac OS X Panther? What aboutTechTool Deluxe? Can anyone tell me if Norton Utilities, which I've been using with great success under OS9, is of any use in OSX (Panther)? I'm thinking of checking the file structure and defragging the internal hard drive. I've come across some posts on the web suggesting that NU doesn't handle the OS X file system properly and can cause more problems than it solves. Is this true? What's your feeling on Norton on OSX? On a related note, I used to have TechTool Pro which had options to check the disk and update some kind of consistency check of the file system every few hours. I bought an AppleCare warranty, which included TechTool Deluxe. Is this better (or the same) as TechTool Pro? I ran it today and discovered that while it has all of the hardware diagnostic stuff, it doesn't seem to have those options to be set to keep checking the file system (on OS9 it claimed that that helps restore in the event of a file system problem because it saved state). Any info on these issues would be greatly appreciated! Please cc: to mlevin77@comcast.net. -- Mike Levin mlevin77@comcast.net |

Please cc: to > mlevin77@comcast.net. I'm no longer using NU for OS X (only Norton Internet Security). However all Norton products are not fully compatible with Panther yet. You can check this page for info: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...8256b4a0078a51 d/5a024235f844181888256dc000724ae4?OpenDocument&prod =&ver=&src=sg&pcode=&svy =&csm=no Re defragmenter: I'd recommend Drive X. In fact if you buy Drive X now, you will get a free upgrade to TechTools Pro 4, if it ever comes out (They have been announcing the new release since May on the Micromat site, but every month they bump it out another month, without explanations -- drives me nuts and has me doubt in their professionalism; after all, don't announce something as coming out next month if you're not sure, and then continue doing that from month to month -- just raises expectations -- in this consumer at least -- and then brings disappointment. Sorry for getting off the track...) Michael |

Does anyone know if the version of Techtool Deluxe that comes with Applecare qualifies for upgrade pricing to TT4 Pro? -- to respond, change "spamless.invalid" with "optonline.net" please mail OT responses only |

However, if you run Disk Doctor on the boot drive, you need to start from the CD anyway, so you can still check for errors with v. 8. For some more info: http://www.tidbits.com/tb-issues/TidBITS-707.html#lnk3 > On a related note, I used to have TechTool Pro which had options to check > the disk and update some kind of consistency check of the file system every > few hours. Panther checks SMART now itself. |

TechTool Deluxe does not have all the features of TechTool Pro 4. TTP4 was released a couple of days ago. It includes the disk optimization and repair functions.
