| A couple of questions from a new OS X user: Findercustomization, PCMCIA flash memory crashes, loss of network, etc. Hi all - I'm the biologist who was asking for advice on getting a new Mac with OSX. Thanks very much to the people who replied - I got some very helpful info. I just upgraded to Panther on a new powerbook. As a huge Mac fan, and an old Unix sysadmin, I am loving it!! I have begun to play and customize, but haven't yet gotten to go through the "Unix Mac Hacks" and "Mac OS Bible" books. In the meantime, I wonder if anyone can give me any advice on the following: 1) is there any way to make it activate a new Finder window (like what happens if I click on the 1st icon in the Dock) whenever I hit the F12 key? I have tried playing with the keyboard control panel but haven't been able to figure out how to tell it to a new Finder window to the function keys. 2) is there any way to make my desktop icons sit where they are? I have a couple of things on there (including my internal hard drive icon) and whenever a new thing gets put on there, all my icons shuffle and change places! I'd like them to stay put. 3) my machine seems to crash when I put in a PCMCIA card with a FlashMemory card in it. I used to do this all the time with my OS9 powerbook (circa 2000) and it worked fine - the card showed up as a disk on the desktop. This laptop locks up! Am I missing something? Do I need a special driver or something weird for FlashMemory in the PCMCIA slot? 4) is there any way to force windows to expand themselves to the size necessary to fit all of the contents? In OS9, I can click a little square on the control bar of any window and it sizes itself to fit the contents (if possible, given the size of the screen). Here, I can't find a way to do it - the green button on the left top of each window almost does this, but not quite - the windows are still smaller in one or both dimensions than needed to show all of its contents. 5) I am using WiFi through the internal AirPort card. Every once in a while (once or twice a week), the ability to access the internet disappears. No errors, but the AirPort utility says it can't find any base station. After a reboot, all is well. Any ideas what happens or how to reset the airport stuff without rebooting? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or info! Please cc: to mlevin77@comcast.net when replying, if possible. From the help window: 1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Keyboard & Mouse. 2. Click Keyboard Shortcuts. 3. To disable a shortcut, deselect the checkbox next to its description in the list. 4. To change the key combination for a shortcut, select the character in the Shortcut list. Type a new shortcut by holding down the key combination that you want to use instead. Tip: You cannot use each type of key (for example, a letter key) more than once in a key combination. 5. Quit and restart any applications you are using for the new keyboard shortcut to take effect. > Hi all - > > I'm the biologist who was asking for advice on getting a new Mac with > OSX. Click the desktop (the background on your screen), then choose View > Show View Options and make your choices. To have icons arranged in rows or columns, select "Snap to grid." To organize your icons by name, date, size, or kind, select "Keep arranged by" and choose a way to arrange the icons from the pop-up menu. Uncheck the "arrange by" box and they should stay put. I think the default checks it. |

| Re: A couple of questions from a new OS X user: Findercustomization, PCMCIA flash memory crashes, loss of network, etc. Sorry, but I still don't get it. I got as far in the menus as you said, and I can redefine the keys, but what I can't figure out is how to tell it to open a finder window - how do I specify that?
