OpenOffice.org?

Is OpenOffice.org a viable alternative to Microsoft Office on OS X?
I need to be compatible with MS Office (Powerpoint and Word), and have
been happily using OpenOffice on Windows; is it pretty much the same?

Thanks!

Viable? Yes.

Best? No.

Yep. In your situation, I suppose the best thing WOULD be to use
OpenOffice for X11 on OS X, since you're already used to it.

For most people seeking an alternative to MS Office, I would suggest
ThinkFree Office, since they don't have to bother with X11 (which, for
most people is WAY outta their league).

I'm not necessarily against using something other than OpenOffice, but
I was really impressed at the compatibility between Word/Powerpoint
and OpenOffice. Is ThinkOffice as good in this regard? It would be
nice to not *have* to use X11...

Thanks for you reply, Chas.

Seems pretty good to me. Just like Office, only a bit slower.

Today I get to update this.

Now that KOffice has been ported to OS X natively*, a new day is dawning
for Mac users and Linux lovers. As Emeril might say, the ability of Mac
users to declare independence from the evil of MS, and the ability of
Linux users to enjoy Mac OS X has been significantly "kicked up a notch."

*finished binaries won't be available for a while pending code cleanup,
but the important thing is that all KDE-based apps like Konqueror,
KOffice and others can now easily be ported over and run as NATIVE Mac
OS X apps.
