Opinions/Experience - Panther on iBook G3 800

Hi all,

Anyone have experiences to share with Panther on G3 800 iBook? I've got
384Mb RAM, but want to know if anyone has installed and noticed anything
major - ie. speed improvements, etc.

I'm aware Panther is meant to be faster, but want to hear real world
experiences....

thanks!
spanky

It'll will be more responsive. I have no regrets for installing it on
our family's old iMac DV 400MHz. Your 800MHz iBook would be also much
better with it.

I installed it on an iBook-500 w. 384 MB ram... slower CPU than yours,
slower video (with less video RAM) and a slower system bus.

It's a big improvement over Jaguar on the same system... faster boot up,
faster application start times, generally a perkier feel.

Well worthwhile.

Mac journalist Gene Steinberg, of Mac Nightowl, installed Panther on an
older system, benchmarking before and after ... he reports the results
on:

I have it on a 366 MHz Lime iBook (320 MB RAM). Overall it is a
great improvement. Speed is a bit faster. But the 10.3 things like
Expose and fast user switching are really important in the use of the
machine. In particular with a 800 X 600 screen Expose is extremely
useful when running 10 or 15 apps. After using it for a few weeks I
don't notice the speed change (you get used to it) but the interface
and application changes are what I do notice all the time. Almost all
for the better save I've lost the ability to browse the Window's
network at work.

Interesting... I found Panther's Windows-networkability much improved.
For example, it instantly located my shared Windows printer, which had
stopped connecting under Jaguar.
