Problem with iMac and Panther?

I have a friend who tried to install Panther on her slot-load iMac. Her
computer seems to run OK (she can access the drive via filesharing), but
there is no video.

Anyone see this before and know a cure?

Brian

Kinda. Not during an install but when I was playing with resolutions.
Everything worked great but when I started the computer up the next day
I had a black screen. I started the computer from an OS 9 CD which gave
me a screen to view. Didn't do anything else except a restart. Panther
came up in the resoulution I had set which I immediatly changed.

Sorry I can't come up with anything more definitive except boot from a
CD but it's the only black screen experiance I had and for some reason
it seemed to work at the time.

Just tried booting from OS 9.2 CD; no dice.
Zapped PRAM; no dice.
Reset logic board; no dice.

I'll try that, though it's now happened to a second unit. Same age as the
first, though! 8^)

Re: Problem with iMac and Panther?

If she didnšt install over Jaguar, she may be missing a firmware
upgrade. I remember that a bunch of people ran into this last year with
Jag and screamed bloody murder. I think the cure was to boot with an
external monitor connected, then applying the firmware.

Just as a heads up--You need to have OS 9 installed on the boot drive
in order to run the firmware update.!

I know b/c this happened to me when I tried to install Jag on my slot
load running 8.6

I am even more frustrated b/c I don't have a copy of OS 9, and Jag
didn't come with it like 10.1 did. So know I have an effectively dead
iMac sitting in my study. Repeated calls to Applecare weren't
effective either since Apple doesn't want to send me a copy of OS 9,
nor can they sell me one. Anyone know where I can find a copy on the
cheap?

Much obliged, and good luck with update Brian.

eBay has some cheap OS 9 disks for sale. I can't tell whether or not
you are in the US, however, so this may not be available to you.

I happen to have OS 9 on my computer. But, if I didn't have it, I would
also be in trouble. I recently did a firmware update (afer having
problems with Panther) and needed OS 9 to run it. But, I had several
questions. How was I supposed to know I needed the update? Software
Update never told me - why not? (It told me I needed a "Hard Disk
Update" which, it turned out, I didn't need.) What if I had found out
I needed the G4 firmware update after I dumped my OS 9 and perhaps
gave away or sold my disks?

Am I missing something here? Is Apple really screwing up in this OS X
switch?
