Firewire too slow ?

I'm going to post this query here too. Can anyone help? I have a brand
new iBook G3 900 with extra RAM for 640mb, and it's taking over 14
minutes to copy 1gb of data from my old laptop in Firewire target disk
mode. Can anyone tell me what is wrong? Is this thing garbage? I've
already erased everything and re-installed the whole system. I'm trying
to do this in OS 9.2.

ISTR that the hard drive used in older laptops are pretty slow --
4200RPM or even lower I think.

I suspect that's your culprit.

Is this one really that old? They just made it in April of this year I
think. It's so frustrating.

4200 is not really slow in a laptop; they've only just begun to use 5400
drives.

However, it IS slow compared to desktop drives, where 7200 drives have been
common for ages, and 10000 drives are being introduced.

The copy-to machine is new, the OP mentions that the slowdown is while
copying from their "old" laptop. This is the one that might have a 4200 or
slower HD, I believe.
