| Panther multiple user question I'm passing my G3 iBook-500 with Panther installed to my daughter, having replaced it with a new, affordable, and very nice G4-iBook. Previously, I was the sole user listed on the old iBook, and had administrator priviledges. I added my daughter as a user, and while the preference panel claims that she has full rights, her user-name/password doesn't seem to be usable when installing software that wants an administrator's password. For now, I've left my account on the system, and will give her the password-- but I would prefer to remove that account entirely. I would hope that removing that account would leave her account with administrator rights-- but I'm afraid that instead, it would leave no one with such power, except the root account (which isn't enabled). Any suggestions? |

Have you checked her short name is a member of the 'admin' group in NetInfo? Rob.. |

(A bit later): I haven't checked on her machine (she's still asleep), but opening NetInfo Manager on my new system, I don't see how that's done... It's a set of lists in Finder-like column view... I can, for example, click 'groups' in the left-most column, then admin ... that lets me see info about the admin group, including users, but it's greyed out, not letting me make any changes. I assume when I do that on her system, I will discover that her name is not listed as a member of the admin group-- but that will only confirm what I already suspect. So how do I add her to that group? |

At the bottom there is a little button with a padlock in it which says 'Click the lock to make changes' or choose 'Authenticate...' in the 'Security' menu. After that, select 'groups', followed by the group 'admin'. In the pane below, there will be a line with property 'users'. Select that line and choose 'New Value' in the 'Directory' menu and put in her short name into the text field. Save changes. Rob. |

Curious that this wasn't presented as an option when creating her account. |

That's right. Because she's a user, not an administrator (only admins have the power to actually modify the system). > For now, I've left my account on the system, and will give her the > password-- but I would prefer to remove that account entirely. Surely this could be quickly and easily solved by: 1. Reinstall Panther (clean install, does NOT erase the hard drive) 2. Set up daughter as sole account/system administrator 3. Delete "Previous System" folder. > I would hope that removing that account would leave her account with > administrator rights-- but I'm afraid that instead, it would leave no > one with such power, except the root account (which isn't enabled). You're right, that would not work. -- Cheers, _Chas_ http://www.apple.com/switch non-spammers can write to chasm at mac (dot com) |

A clean install would work-- but even easier, once I knew where to look, was to log in with my administrive user name, go to the Accounts system preference, click on her name, go to the Security tab, then check the option to [x] Allow User to Administer This Computer. After logging in with her log-in, I went back to Accounts preference, and removed my account and turned off Fast User Switching. |
