| Panther & Classic, etc I've a G3 iBook and G4 iMac, both running OS9.2 and X.1.5 If I get Panther, can I still install OS 9.2 and run Classic apps? Also, the System CDs I have are marked "iBook" and "iMac", and I was told I couldn't use iBook CDs to install OSX onto the iMac and v.v. Is Panther machine-specific like that? Sorry if these are naive questions, and thanks for any advice. LL |

Yes. Classic still exists for running legacy apps under X. If your hardware was capable of booting 9 as a standalone OS before you installed Panther, it will remain able to do so afterwards. > Also, the System CDs I have are marked "iBook" and "iMac", and I was > told I couldn't use iBook CDs to install OSX onto the iMac and > v.v. Is Panther machine-specific like that? CDs that come bundled with hardware are often customized for that particular piece of hardware. Boxed operating systems (like the 10.3 boxes they're selling now) should work on any compatible Mac. Unless your Panther CD was bundled with new hardware, you should be able to install it on anything. -- David |

Of course. If Panther were completely unable to run Classic, don't you think this would have, oh I don't know, MADE NEWS somewhere, hmmm? > Also, the System CDs I have are marked "iBook" and "iMac", and I was > told I couldn't use iBook CDs to install OSX onto the iMac and v.v. If you'd thought about this for a few seconds before posting, it wouldn't have seemed so naive. Obviously, the Panther that's sold in stores is not machine-specific -- otherwise they would have to sell different editions, and again we'd have heard about something like that wouldn't we?? I'm sorry if this seems harsh, it's not intended. Just trying to get you to think a bit before posting. Next time, give it a bit of thought, and if you still can't puzzle it out by all means ask here. -- Cheers, _Chas_ http://www.apple.com/switch non-spammers can write to chasm at mac (dot com) |
