| Help with Epson 740 Inkjet Printer Is there a way to prevent the Epson 740 from performing a cleaning routine when I print for the first time in the morning? I have had the printer for about four years, and I use it daily. The first time I use it each day, it goes through the maintenance routine, and I think it's unnecessary. It's not that big of a deal because the printer works really really well, and I don't mind the wait, so I'm just curious, not furious. Cheers, Summer |

| Re: Help with Epson 740 Inkjet Printer Hi Guys, I do keep it on. It's on 24/7 whether I use it or not. It doesn't seem to consume any energy while it's not being used so I figured a long time ago to just leave it on. I printed this message as my first of today, and it still went through the routine. I printed this message as my first of > today, and it still went through the routine. The print heads will clog up hard if you don't do this fairly frequently, so it's probably doing the right thing. Just a few weeks after replacing our old 740 and stashing it in the attic, I pulled it out (along with an old iMac) to donate it to a needy computerless family. My first test print page came out absolutely unmarked by any ink. I ran through the head cleaning routine at least 5 times and while the color heads cleared themselves (mostly), I was still getting NO black at all. Although that was the worst I'd ever seen it clog, I have gotten bad head clogs several times before; say after a week vacation when the printer wasn't used. Which brings us us to the absolutely worst idiocy in the 740, which is that it will NOT allow replacing a cartridge unless IT believes the thing is empty... though there is one point in the cleaning procedure where the carriage sits exposed and stationary long enough to swap the black cartidge behind its back if you're really quick. Sometimes if the offending cartridge is low on ink it's easier just to keep "clearing" it until it runs out. (Though that wouldn't have worked this time since so far as I could tell not a droplet of black ink was escaping.) The Epson 825 with which I replaced it seems to clean itself less, resist clogging better... and also allows me to expose the cartridges for replacement or inspection at any time. -- /--------------------[ David.Butenhof@hp.com ]--------------------\ | Hewlett-Packard Company Tru64 UNIX & VMS Thread Architect | | My book: http://www.awl.com/cseng/titles/0-201-63392-2/ | \----[ http://homepage.mac.com/dbutenhof/Threads/Threads.html ]---/ |

Real helpful, huh? Have you read the manual or checked > preferences/page setup to see if it is something optional? Have you contacted > epson support? The Epson 740 doesn't have the option to clean black or colour separately, and yes it IS idiotic that you have to wait till the PRINTER thinks it's out of ink to put new ink in. :) I once got a good deal on ink and DeadHead cleaner cartridges from ink4art.com, and I must say the DeadHead thing brought my thought-dead printer back to life. Incredible. -- Cheers, _Chas_ http://www.apple.com/switch non-spammers can write to chasm at mac (dot com) |
