| Appletalk problems w/ 10.2.8 Since I updated my system to 10.2.8 I can't print to my trusty old Laserwriter. Print Center tells me that Appletalk is not enabled and gives me directions for doing so in the Network Preference Pane. The problem is that it shows Appletalk as being on in there. If I turn off the checkbox and close the pane, Appletalk is showing on again when re-opened. I have a G4 with the Laserwriter 4/600 PS hooked up through an Etherwrite ethernet bridge. It's worked flawlessly with this machine from day one including OS 10.1 through 10.2.6. It might be coincidental that it started doing this when updating to 10.2.8, but I'm not so sure. My iBook prints to it fine with 10.2.8. I can access the printer just fine through OS 9 on the G4. I haven't had any other network problems. Anyone have any ideas? --andrew-- |

Uninstalling the 10.2.8 update is not an option, apparently. Apple did post a workaround for people who installed the update and then had network problems. Perhaps reading up on this workaround might be useful. You should be able to find it at www.apple.com/support/OS X |

| Re: Appletalk problems w/ 10.2.8 I spent over an hour on the phone with Applecare on Saturday. They had me deleting preferences and deleting and recreating profiles in the Network pane. Still having the same problem. Someone is supposed to be callng me back within 5 days (which would be tomorrow if we're counting business days). They said they needed to speak with some of the engineers. --andrew-- > Apple pulled the 10.2.8 update quickly as people had been experiencing > networking problems, although I have not heard of your particular problem. > Uninstalling the 10.2.8 update is not an option, apparently. I was going to install the latest update but now I'll wait to hear what you have to say. -- Harvey Products makers of Dinghy Dogs The Boater's Best Friend http://www.dinghydogs.com Remove thefrown to email me |

| Re: Appletalk problems w/ 10.2.8 Spent another really long phone call with Apple. We finally figured out that Appletalk isn't initializing for some reason. The only workaround that was found was to initialize Appletalk directly from Terminal. This has to be done each time you restart the computer. I'm holding out to see if updating to Panther might fix it. I kind of doubt it, but it's a lot easier to do a clean install of the OS from the Panther CD than to go back to my original Jaguar disc and have to run updates. They recommended re-installing the system software. I don't know if it'll help you but here's what they had me do. DISCLAIMER: You can do some good damage to your system if you improperly use Terminal. I don't pretend to be an expert, but here's the steps. Do so at your own risk. Open Terminal (in Applications-->Utilities by default) from your username prompt type: appletalk -n This will tell you if the appletalk stack is running. Mine replies: The AppleTalk stack is not running. To manually start Appletalk, enter at the prompt: sudo appletalk -u en0 It'll ask for your password. Enter it and it should start up. At this point mine reads: Current zone for interface en0 is * From what I was told, "en0" is the built-in ethernet port. I believe they said "en1" would be Airport. Hope this helps somone out there. --andrew-- |
