I'm in a real sticky situation. I have a Macintosh Powerbook150
running system 7.1.1. My problem is I have downloaded
a bunch of .hqx files from a PC, and downloaded a version of
Binhex in Macbinary format, And Aladdin Stuffit Expander in
..sea format to floppies, copied them to my Laptop via PC Exchange,
and
now have everything on my hard disk. Here's the problem: Because
everything
was downloaded via PC, I have no way to execute Aladdin Stuffit
expander, nor do I have any way to open MacBinary files. The only thing
I have is a very old copy of the "e-world"/AOL software, v1.0 which
can't even handle most zip files because the compression is out of
date.

I have no access to other Macintoshes, no way to edit the resource
fork so I can have the e-world software identify my .SIT files as Stuffit
files. In otherwords, I'm very stuck and I don't know what to do.
If I could get Binhex 4.0 up and running, I could redownload Stuffit
Expander in Binhex format,decode/decompress that, and maybe with
PC-Exchange, be able to associate the .SIT files with that, and
everything will be fine. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get
this fixed, please let me know. I am very experienced with various systems,
so no suggestion is too technical.

FYI: I have no money, so buying Stuffit Deluxe is out of the question for
me. :(

Your problem is written in a confusing way :) Are you saying that you have
..sit files on your pc and your trying to extract them? If that's the case
then you get get Stuffit Expander for windows off of Aladdins page and
expand them easily. Or is your probleem that you have them on a mac, but
the file associations are messed up because you got them off your pc?

I think his problem is two-fold...

1) He's transfered files onto his Mac via the PC, which has stripped
out the resource forks, and hence the file creator type information.
That could be worked around except...
2) He doesn't have a copy of Stuffit Expander. Note that because he's
using System 7.1, he'll need an older copy, and because he doesn't
have direct Internet connection on the Powerbook 150, he can only
download it onto his PC, then transfer it to the Mac on floppies.

It will be difficult to get a copy that will run that way, without
having a copy of ResEdit and the knowledge and skills to use it to
rebuild the resource fork.

What he really needs is someone local to him (or willing to mail him)
to get him a copy of an older version of Stuffit Expander on a floppy
diskette.

If he e-mails me, I can see about doing that.

The latter. I don't have any way to edit the file associations
either, so I'm in a real bind.

Do you have Script Editor installed with System 7??? I think this is
what you suggested you had as your OS. If this is the case, perhaps
AppleScript can re-assign the file & creator types. Is this all that
you would require? If it is, tell me the file ext and I will write you
a script ( I can't promise that it will work on OS 7 though ).
