ibook 800 advice?

Hello all,
I am seriously looking at getting a new ibook 800/128/30 for C++, Java, SQL,
COBOL programming. Are there any problems with this series, of which I
should be aware? i.e. do the hinges konk out after a year of daily use (like
my Compaq 1600XL 145), are the HDD's reliable, are the LCD's reliable? Also,
is there a decent COBOL programming suite for mac, or will I have to use
Linux on the ibook? Lastly, how is the GUI responsivness under OSX when
compared to a beige G3 500 w/radeon 7000 PCI (QE enabled)?

So far, the only problem that I have had is that the latch doesn't latch as
positively as it used to. Still works, just not as crisply. Oh, and one of
the rubber feet fell off, requiring a replacement purchase of a set of rubber
feet. This after 1 year of operation, with the unit running basically 24-7.

From my experience, 128 k of ram is considered the minimum to run OS 10
alone. You would want more to run any other apps. Also, if the program/s that
you want to run are extremely CPU intensive, a G4 is a much better choice.
For work such a burning DVDs, the G3 machines are considered inadequate in
most circles that I travel in. For general purpose use, the iBooks are nice
machines, IMHO.

I wouldn't run OS X on less than 256mb. In fact, with the low cost of RAM
these days, I'd max it out when you purchase it.
