| ATTO ExpressPCI PSC SCSI Card in 7600 - Help! The card comes from a G3 server, where it was working in conjunction with 2 x 9 Gb Apple HDDs. I was hoping to use them to upgrade my 7600/120 which has Sonnet Crescendo G4 400 MHz CPU card OS 9.1 Orange PCI Firewire Card to Lacie 160 Gb HDD (so PCI slots are all OK) (I know but pre-Firewire Macs won't boot from a Firewire HDD) 1 Gb HDD, Iomega ZIP & HP Scanner on external SCSI bus Original Apple 1 Gb HDD and Apple CD-ROM on internal bus which all work :-)) The ATTO card has V1.2 firmware When I install the ATTO card in the 7600, it starts to boot, both the high term. and low term LEDS on the card light up, gray screen appears, some accessing noises from various HDDs, top left screen pixel disappears, arrow cursor appears and can be moved (which is the normal boot sequence) and then everything locks after ~6 s :-( Remove the ATTO card and everything is back to normal :-} I've downloaded the trouble shooting guide from the ATTO website. I also have their Express Pro-Tools Utility and the 1.6.6 firmware updater, neither of which are much help since the Mac won't boot with the card in place :-(( I've also trawled the Apple Support archives and spent quite a few hrs searching the web. I've tried: 1. Card with and without HDDs attached. 2. Cold and Hot PRAM ZAP (and CUDA reset which I think is the same as a cold PRAM ZAP?) 3. Card in all of the 3 PCI slots. 4. Removal of Firewire PCI card. 5. Removal of all SCIS devices from both external and internal SCSI buses (found an old OS 7.5.5 floppy I could boot from!) 6. Booting from OS 8.5 CD 7. Setting different startup disks. 8. Removing Sonnet G4 card and replacing with original 604PPC. 9. Changing SCSI IDs when 9 Gb HDDs attached to ATTO card. 10. Changing termination on 9 Gb HDDs attached to ATTO card. 11. The Command-shift-D on boot suggested by ATTO to disable the card and allow updating of firmware doesn't work. 12. Most combinations of the above. 13. Waiting - apparently there is an issue on some machines where every SCSI address is checked and it can take 7-8 mins to boot. Still hasn't continued boot after 15 mins. Somewhat to my surprise, I have managed all this without trashing anything and my original system stills works without difficulty! Any suggestions? My previous experience with SCSI buses is that 99 times out of 100, the problem is either ID # or termination but this card seems to be fully software controlled. There are 4 pins on the card (J2) which I can find no information on - are these anything to do with termination or ID # or are they simply to power a remote 'busy' LED? Will the ATTO card have been set up in a non-standard way in the G3 server? Is the 7600 limited to only 2 SCSI buses? Is the Ultra/Wide SCSI capability of the card a problem on the 7600? Is there a PCI standards/speed problem of card versus 7600 PCI? Do you think the ATTO card is trashed? Personally, I would have thought that if it was garbage, the Mac would have still booted? If I put the card in a wintel machine to test it, is this likely to cause any further problems? I did e-mail ATTO Tech Support a couple of days ago bu with no response, so far. All helpful suggestions gratefully received :-) -- Larry Stoter |

(2) Did you search with the newgroups (via google)? (3) Ultimately, if you need Ultra/Wide SCSI on your 7600, you might want to try this "old" Adaptec card: http://www.weirdstuff.com/commerce/c...=1062999872343 The firmware will probably be quite old and for PCs. Download the PowerDomain utilities for Mac as well as the firmware update from the Adaptec web site: it'll work like a charm with MacOS 9 and YDL 3 (I did that for an old Power Computing clone). On the other hand I could not install OS X which apparently does not include the drivers for it, so if you want to run OS X, don't think about that solution, unless another poster has an idea. Note: The firmware hack (that transform a card from PC <-> Mac) does not work with more recent OEM Adaptec card (I tried). (4) Initially more expensive than (3): http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_It...Item=STITAT133 But then the advantage is that you can then get GB and GB for cheap with IDE drives (in comparison to SCSI drives). Works with OS 9, OS X and YDL. I used a Tempo ATA 100 with the 3 OS and the chipset on the 133 is supposed to be identical or compatible. The other advantage is that when you dump the 7600 for a more recent Mac, the ATA card and the drives will be more up-to-date for recycling. HTH |
