macally rfmouse jr - Technology Questions

macally rfmouse jr

what is the purpose of the usb cable extending from the charger for the
mouse? I don't really see a need for it because the mouse works fine
without it and I don't see the lights indicating a charge when only the
usb cable is hooked up without the AC plugged in. Am I missing something?
