HELP!!! #2: Software Update won't work

MAN! You guys are like geniuses! I posted a question on
comp.sys.mac.system yesterday about an Apple HD firmware update that
had made my sister's G4 fail to boot. And now it's fixed and running
again! Thanks! Anyway, so I've another prolem that I'd like some help
on:

This time it's my own G4/400. It runs 10.2.6 but lately (probably
about 2 weeks ago) Software Upadate has stopped working. I'm still
able to see what's available for download, like the HD Update that I
"installed" on my sister's G4, but every time I click "Install", an
error message pops up immediately:

"The Installation has encountered a problem. None of the checked
updates were successfully installed.
To try again, choose Download Checked Items in the Update menu and
open the package from the desktop."

I've tried that multiple times, I've even tried doing that after
running "First Aid"'s "Repair Disk" and "Repair permissions" on the
disk but to no avail.

So here I am, utterly stuck. If you can think of anything that you
think I should try, please feel free to let me know and share w/ the
community. Thanks again!

Don't know if this will help but I found Software Update only works
correctly on my iBook if I run it under the Administrator account. If
I try as a regular user, even when I authorize it via the dialog it
still doesn't work correctly.

Re: HELP!!! #2: Software Update won't work

I've a B&W G3 with exactly the same problem. At first Disk first aid said
nothing wrong but lately it tells me I have a disk problem which can't be
fixed. I intend to backup, reformat and start again but haven't got around
to it yet.

I wonder if you in fact have a disk problem as well which isn't severe
enough (yet) for Disk first aid to be able to determine?

Doesn't sound terribly logical I know but it's my gut feeling.

If you have any data on that disk that you value, I strongly recommend
that you repair the disk problem before you lose it for good. If a
backup and reformat is too painful, invest in DiskWarrior -- quickly.

No, we *are* geniuses. What I can't grasp is why there are a bunch of
posts from July 2003 sitting on comp.sys.mac. This was originally posted
on July 30, 2003 and x-posted to four groups, two of which I cut.
