| new generation ipod versus old, others Hi, I am interested in buying an iPod and am wondering the benefits of the new generation versus the old one, from someone who has used both. Is it worth the cost? I know the new ones are slightly smaller and have an arguably advanced user interface, but I'm not sure about the monetary investment. For instance, just checked Micro Warehouse, and I can get a 20gb iPod (presumably first generation) for $300 but a 15gb new generation iPod for $400. Hmm, 5 less gigabytes, $100 more dollars. Now, the first one does say that it is only for a Mac, but I've heard of software that allows you to use it on a PC (which I have). Anyone ever done this successfully? By the way, if anyone has a recommendation for which group this should actually go under, I'd love to hear it. The newsgroup logic doesn't make sense to me yet. Tom |

Hmm, 5 less gigabytes, $100 more dollars. In that case, I'd probably go with the older one- unless you really need one of the minor features of the new one. You won't be able to use the latest version of the syncing software, but there aren't many features missing, yet. What you'll probably be giving up is 'future-proofing'. As features are added, the older versions will be left behind. Like the dock. The new ones have recording capability, but it isn't supported. Will Apple release an update to enable that? Who knows? > > Now, the first one does say that it is only for a Mac, but I've heard > of software that allows you to use it on a PC (which I have). Anyone > ever done this successfully? There's no logic to this group. Just windroids making foo(ls) of themselves. |

For what intents and purposes is it better? For instance, is the newer one truly "pocket-sized" whereas the older one is too big to be considered so? |

When is Apple going to produce an iPod with an interchangable battery. They could make quite a bit extra selling everyone a spare battery for 69 bucks or so. |

| Re: new generation ipod versus old, others Belkin has (or will shortly) a battery pack for the new generation iPods. It takes 4 AA batteries (great if you've got a NiMH recharger) and clips on the back of the unit, offering a claimed 15 hours of additional playback. Definitely takes the iPod out of the pocketable (unless you like having a bulge in your pants... *cough* *cough*) but great if you're worried about losing power on a long trip. Since it uses AA's you've got a limitless and ubiquitous source of power. I'll most likely get one before my next big trip...
