Help? Folder "Cannot Be Deleted"

Greetings, all...

I'm running OS 10.2.1 on a G4 867 machine. I'm sure the quandary I'm in
has to do with the ****ed "Log On" and "User" crap in OS_X, but I can't
figure this out for the life of me.

I'm trying to move a folder to the trash from the HD, and I get the
message "The item cannot be moved to the trash because it cannot be
deleted."

Strangely, I *CAN* move to the trash the items *within* the folder. But
I can't get the folder itself into the trash.

I've tried using SuperGetInfo to change the permissions with no luck.
I've tried to log on as the root user, but I can't remember how to do
it, and the instructions in "The Missing Manual" don't seem to jive with
what I see on my computer screen.

I'd appreciate any guidance anyone could provide.

Thanks!

If you've never logged in as root before, you have to enable the root user:

Go to the terminal as an administrative user and type:

sudo tcsh
<your password>

passwd root
<the desired passwd for root>
<again>

Now you can login as root bij typing su from your normal prompt.

Then just type rm -rf <path to the folder>

Oh and the folder has to be anywhere but in the trashcan if you want to
delete it this way.

Succes!

Greetings,

Eveline.

Greetings, all...

Well... I consulted the wondrous tech support people at Small Dog
Electronics (THESE ARE GREAT PEOPLE! CHECK 'EM OUT!!) and they
suggested repairing the permissions in Disk Utilities. It worked like a
charm, and life is now good again. :)

Finder crashes. Want to see it crash or hang? Mount an SMB Windows
share. Take that Windows box off the network. Boom. Same with NFS,
per other posts I've read. It's terrible!

I also get Finder crashes from time to time just mounting .dmg files
over a network!

I've gotten Finder crashes just going to ftp://xx.xx.yy.zz addresses
that ftp IPADDRESS in Terminal got to right away.

The disk / filesystem issues are well known. A good disk FS wouldn't
require such nonsense as constant revalidation and repairs. FAT was
similar; NTFS doesn't have those problems.

These are serious problems. For most people they may not be that bad;
for some of us it makes using the Finder very annoying. For you to
pretend they don't exist is silly.

that sounds simple enough, but i'd lay bets... 97% of osx users couldn't
make those series of steps happen... the inertia of the gui is just too
intrenched...

If that's the case, then I'd guess they couldn't do anything with a root
prompt either, so why the trouble to get it in the first place?

Re: Help? Folder "Cannot Be Deleted"

Try 1) boot 9.2 . . . trash file
2).boot any bootable CD . . . trash file
3.).NetInfo Manager Menu: Security, follow Missing Manual
directions . . . log out, log in as root, trash file.
1). and 2). have never failed me; 3). is not as reliable for anything.
OS X is NOT user friendly,
I'ved used all three at one point or another. I suggest you get a root
user going, especially if you are like me and like to tinker with the
system. OS X isn't as forgiving at being tinkered with as pre 9.2 of
MS DOS. But ‹ usually ‹ is repairable.
Backup. Backup. Backup.
(I'm beginning to learn UNIX skills; I anticipate OS X will seem much
more friendly once I have mastered the command line. The command line
is something I missed when I moved from MS DOS to Mac. It is the only
thing I missed.)
