I recall a version of vi that could edit binaries. The display was
of hex equivalents of the file's bitfields, and the right side had a
representation of the characters they equated to.

Does anyone know of a good hex editor for OS X? Any of the
current commercial packages allow that?

elvis has a hex edit mode
