upgrading iMac G3

I'm looking to put a 120gb HD into an original Bondi Blue G3 iMac. Can
any brand of HD work as long it is an ultra ATA drive? Also with OS
10.3 do I still need to partition the first 8gig separately for the
system to recognize?

It's not worth the expenditure and effort.

Any brand should work, but Panther will be sluggish - and I'm not sure
something that old would recognize the whole drive.

I'm giving this to my grandson, so speed is not an issue. I know that
the IDE on the G3s will only recognize a max of 128 gig, but I'm not
sure about the 8 gig partition that was necessary early in OS X. I can
get a referb or a "white label" one for less than $40.
I hate to see this relic thrown into the landfil or even recycled.

No. The 8 gig limit is not due to the version of the OS - it's dictated
by the hardware in the Bondi Blue (as well as in beige PowerMac G3:s).
Besides, as "Mr. Strat" points out, it run Panther quite slow.
It will work, but you need RAM - preferably the maximum of 512 MB.

I'd say that about my SE/30, but not about an Bondi blue iMac.
I happily swapped that for a 400 MHz iMac DV - 7 years ago...
