cd writer install

Hello all,

I don't know so much about Macintoshes, so I'm hoping someone out there can
help...

I have a G3 mac running OS9 with a CD player, all working well. I also have
a separate CD writer, a Yamaha CRW8424S which I want to use to burn CDs
(This has been used on a mac before). It's a SCSI machine, and is recognized
by the SCSI bus software, but that's a far as I've got. I've played around
with the extentions, on and off, but no luck so far. Do I need a special
driver? I can't find one on the net, although I have updated the firmware.
And do I need burning software? I read somewhere that you can burn CDs from
the Finder, but I've no idea how.

Can anyone help..... Please!!!!!!

all the best,

Laurence Hall
Amsterdam

It's been over a year and a half since I've moved to OS X, but I seem
to remember that there were some issues of the burning features in OS
9. There are extensions that need to be activated to allow it, and the
CD-R needs to be recognized by the system as a writable device. The
Burn command will be in the Special drop down menu, so if you put in a
blank CD you should be able to copy files to the CD icon and then click
on the Burn - or Cntl Click (right click) and see the option.

If all that doesn't work, then you might have to use a burning software
like Toast - I think version 5 was the last one that worked with OS 9.

Macintosh is the plural form.

One thing you never mentioned is whether you can read from the CD drive.
Assuming that it works,
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58804> may be of help
and there is
<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19697>

Re: cd writer install

Thanks to both Tim and John for helping. I'll try to get onto it this
weekend. The drive is indeed not readable; right now I can't read from the
burn drive, although once I did get a
reaction when putting a cd in the drive, and then the mac crashed. Oh well.
Maybe the drive doesn't work indeed, once I've read the articles I should
know more about what I'm doing wrong. Thanks again both.

regards,

Laurence

I'm running Toast Lite v5.2.2 (which came bundled with a DVD burner) on
my Classic system.
