Now that Apple no longer sells the isight web camera as a stand-alone
item, what is out there for users of the olders Macs?

I found a USB driver (<http://sourceforge.net/projects/webcam-osx/> that
supported a very old Creative-brand camera and an old PowerBook. I later
found an iSight just a couple of weeks ago at an Apple store. Call around to
stores and maybe they will ship it to you.

There are several webcams available. Just check your favorite Mac
retailer or wait until Apple releases a USB iSight, which might be
fairly soon.

There are at least two firewire cameras that seem to have the same or
similar specs. One is the iSweet by Sony, sold at Smalldog for $130, the
other is the Firei camera sold by LA computer for $99. These do not have
microphones, so they would work for either an older Mac with a built-in
mic, like the G4 iMacs or iBooks, but not with something like a
Quicksilver. I think both need a processor speed of 1 Ghz and a G4 in
order to work well. I have actually used a G3 500 ibook with my iSight
and it was clunky but worked.
