What exactly is the problem? Did the computer hang when the screensaver came
on - hence the unexpected shutdown?

My problem was related to my video card Nvidia 8800GT failing to wakeup when
the computer went to sleep. Yes, I have the latest patches and updates.
Problem began day 1 too.

I disabled sleep and I close the monitor when I'm not using it. Seems ok
now. Not the best solution. But...
