The BIOS is the basic code that the machine reads when it is first turned on by the operator (you). It sits on a silicon chip on the main board of your computer. You are able to enter this code and make a few custom changes but it can cause trouble so be careful. You usually enter this by pressing F2 or another key combination (read the screen at the time of the booting).
POST is the power on self test. There are messages showing on the screen at the time you start the machine - these are some of the human readable POST information. You'll want to look for information about the hard drive.
Since you aren't experienced then take your time and read some of the general hardware troubleshooting | information sites on the web. Learn as much as you can. Good luck.
