Excuse me for putting my two cents in but that was one of the BIGGEST
mistakes you might have made. Are you attempting to further corrupt your
computer? Do you want a really nice looking boat anchor? Because those
little "tricks" were, at times, necessary before windows '98 but now they
will make things MUCH worse. Why don't you do a logical thing like system
restore or reinstall your system files? Just turn the computer on ande let
it boot up, open a DOS prompt and type SFC /scannow and then let the
operating system repair ITSELF

Even tried with a reboot in the middle. There was a Windows Update
Service -- that's the one you meant, right? There was no Automatic Updates
service
