It's no accident that you're being fleeced. Microsoft made conscious
design choices with Vista to ensure it would be incompatible with older
hardware and software.
After all, what good does it do Microsoft's shareholders to know that
people with 5-year-old XP systems are still satisfied with what they've
got???
I would suggest you contact Dell customer service and ask them if you can
exchange your Vista license for an XP license. Scuttlebutt has it that
people who are persistent with such requests eventually get what they
want. At the very least, you should let Dell know that you are not happy
with Vista.
