Does Vista Home Premium NOT accept a USB printer as its only/first printer?

My Lexmark Z23-33 is recognized by the USB function but not visible nor
addressable under Printers.

Do I really need an old 'local' printer with the big connector as a first
printer?

Is there a workaround?

I have a USB printer as my only printer under Vista Home Premium. No
problem.
