Did you ever get to the bottom of this one? I have the exact same issue as
you do. XP SP@ and IE7. My last MSoft update happened on 16 June at about
3:00pm then at about 8:00pm I could not type in input boxes or access
tools>internet options. same as you. I rolled back the updates but no help.
i suspect a virus of some kind but McAfee did not pick it. MSoft cannot
seem to help and there does not seem to be a fix at the moment. So did you
resolve it?

Any help would be appreciated.
