Your citing of windows 98 would ordinarily make it not appropriate here.
But, your recant of the problem seems to be hardware issue, not an OS
problem. So, either inappropriate for either newsgroup, or, appropriate in
either OS newsgroup, or, appropriate in a hardware associated newsgroup
only. I personally won't quibble about such nonsense.

My opinion of the problem you describe is that either the cmos is corrupted,
OR, you have a physical hardware problem. If the PC has a watch type
battery, remove it for a few minutes, then, reinsert it in its original
orientation. If the cmos was not damaged, should default the bios to
original condition. If the cmos (on the motherboard, not the bios chip) is
damaged, will not correct the problem if associated. Remove and reinsert
the battery only when the PC is unplugged from the wall outlet.

If you can get to dos or 98, and still have some problems, then go to a
windows 98 newsgroup
