What brand of laptop ? usually, shortcut keys to controls things like
brightness, volume, etc are controlled by 3rd party applications, usually
provided by your laptop mfg. check their website. (i.e. for a Dell you
would need to find and download the appropriate version of dell's quickset
program for your laptop.)

does the brightness change depending whethter tha laptop is running on
battery or AC power ?
