Because messenger and Outlook check for messages and random intervals. Even
with auto send and receive turned off, with IE open, random packets can be
transmitted and this would register as system activity. That fact it didn't
happen when you closed and reopened the apps was coincidental as the sleep
function may have been set to start in a period when those applications were
still idle.
