It sounds like the battery is on a one-way trip down, and any tips will be
an exercise in frustration at best, at least from experience.

The good news is that there is a chance that the x41 battery, if a
replacement, is affected by the battery recall and the problem would then be
an easy fix - a new battery from IBM. Check here for details, if not
already:

In the case of a battery that is over-discharged (such as a thinkpad x-41
not used for an extended period of time, use of the external quick charger
might help. This is a quote from the IBM website:

Battery cannot be fully charged in standard charge time when powered
off
The battery might be over-discharged. Do the following:
1.. Turn off the computer.

2.. Make sure that the over-discharged battery is in the computer.

3.. Connect the AC adapter to the computer and let it charge.
If the battery cannot be fully charged in 24 hours, use a new battery. If
the optional Quick Charger is available, use it to charge the
over-discharged battery.
