I bought a Stylistic 3400s from ebay for about $180 w/shipping + 2 good batteries seller was laptopenterprise. You want the 3400s because it comes with the screen/digitizer that works both indoors + outdoors. You can see pics of the difference at;
http://www.tabletpc2.com/Review-Fujitsu4121.htm. That's the newer model of course but you get the idea. Once you use this outside, you'll wonder how you lived before. Forget about the convertibles [tablet/notebook combo] you see everywhere. They work great but can you picture carrying around 5 to 6lbs of stuff on your arm for hours??? The 3400 weighs in at 3.3lbs w/battery. Good battery gets about 1.5hrs/ full charge. mine came with 2 good batteries + ac adapter. Oh get the carrying case w/ x strap custom made for the 3400 $15 ebay. 1 drop w/o and crapola. The 3400 has the best screen size 10.4" 8.9" is lighter but too small. 14"
too heavy.
XP pro runs fine on it, mine came with w2k pro, but I installed xp pro on it. You can install home edition if you like, just be sure to install the w2k drivers for the digitizer and such from fujitsu.com or the driver cds.
All in all the 3400s, unless you'll only use it indoors, is a great splash into real tablet computing, sorry pocketpc palm symbian, but 2 1/2" by 2" just doesn't cut it. Use it to browse the internet from your bed ( what about typing you say, onscreen keyboard from accessibility options works great used on tiny palm pilot before too; scribble for T I think not ) just add the wifi to the pcmcia slot, use it for gps, everyday computing, photoshop would crawl but still cool to try out brush stokes [for serious drawing on screen get the cintiq 24" ], scribble notes while out, real notes. You can save your handwritten notes as pics too. But you must use one note 2003 + hard drive upgrade with this unit. Works like a champ. You can p/u an oem version on ebay for $30 with hologram cd + coa.
The 3400 any model s or c comes with a 6GB drive that is slow. You can upgrade it with a newer fujitsu 40 gb or 80 gb notebook drive from newegg.com, just need to buy the 44 pin to 40 pin adapter with the drive to install it. The 40gig comes with a 2mb cache and the 80gig comes with a 8mb cache so either one makes a huge difference in how the tablet performs. You can easily run xp with either drive w/handwriting recognition from tablet edition or office xp, 2003. But I did read from another chap on this forum that tablet edition wasn't that great at least on this model 3400 so switched back to xp pro + office xp w/handwriting and works like a champ he says.

Any other general comments on a 3400?
I've been looking for a cheap tablet style thing just for taking notes and a little word processing.
BTW, have you seen Evernote ( http://www.evernote.com)? It's in beta, but it's looking like a very nice handwriting-capable note taking application. Especially if they implement audio notes, I think it plus something like a 3400 could be a great, cheap note taking appliance. |
