did you move any of the power cables (for cd/hd) when you put in the new HD?
if you have one of them laying about it can short out when you plug in a USB
cable, it's happened to me before, tape up the ends of all loose cables, but
the idea of a card shorting out sounds more interesting (although less
likely than just a cable touching the case) but maybe it's the card/port you
plugged the USB card into like wally said
